1What happens to a lease when an employee leaves
An employee handing in their notice shouldn't mean a headache for your payroll team. Here's the good news: a novated lease belongs to the employee, not your business, so when someone leaves, the risk and the responsibility largely leave with them too.
2The short version
The finance agreement was always in your employee's name. Your business was only ever facilitating the payroll deductions, so there's no financial liability sitting with you when someone resigns, is made redundant, or moves on.
3What happens to the lease itself
Your employee generally has a few paths open to them:
• Their new employer offers novated leasing too. Leaselab can transfer the lease across and set up new payroll deductions with the new employer, no disruption to the lease itself.
• Their new employer doesn't offer it. They can continue the lease by managing payments directly with the lender instead of through payroll.
• They'd rather close it out. They can pay out the vehicle early and take ownership of the car outright.
4One thing worth flagging to departing employees
If they choose to pay out the vehicle early, their fuel card and any lease-provided insurance end on the date the residual is actually paid, not on the original lease end date. It's a small detail, but one that avoids a surprised phone call a few weeks later.
5Timing matters more than most businesses expect
The smoothest exits happen when we hear about a departure early, ideally as soon as notice is handed in, rather than the day someone's final pay runs. That gives us time to line up the right option with the employee before their last payslip, instead of scrambling to sort it out after the fact. It's worth building "notify Leaselab" into your standard offboarding checklist alongside the usual IT and access steps.
6A couple of things employers often ask
• Do we owe anything if the employee can't keep up payments after they leave? No. The lease and its obligations sit with the employee, not your business, before, during or after their employment with you.
• Does this slow down our offboarding process? Not on your end. Aside from the one notification, everything else happens directly between Leaselab and the employee.
7What you actually need to do
Really, just one thing: let us know when a team movement happens. A quick note to your Account Manager or through the Employer Portal is enough for us to stop payroll deductions cleanly at their final pay and pick up the handover from there. No lock-in penalties, no paperwork chasing on your end.
8Any questions before it happens?
If you've got someone leaving soon and want to talk through the specifics, your Account Manager can walk you through it in five minutes. We can also provide a simple one-page guide for outgoing employees explaining their options, handy to include in your standard offboarding pack.
